Spring Conservation Goose Hunt 2025 – Waiting on the Birds
March is here, the season is open, and we’re ready to drop the hammer on some geese—but where the hell are they? If you’re in Southeast Manitoba, you’ve probably noticed that the skies are still pretty quiet. The geese aren’t here yet.
What’s the Hold-Up?
Spring came early last year, but this time around, we’re still waiting. The big flocks of snows and Canadas haven’t pushed up yet, likely held back by colder weather to the south. Sure, you might see the odd small group, but the real migration hasn’t started rolling in. That means it’s a waiting game right now—scouting every morning, watching the weather, and being ready to go when the first big waves show up.
Season Details (For When the Birds Finally Arrive)
Whenever they decide to show up, here’s what the season looks like:
-
Canada Goose: March 1 – April 10 (GBHZ 3 & 4)
- Daily limit: 8
- Possession limit: 24
-
Snow & Ross’s Goose: March 15 – May 31 (GBHZs 2, 3, and 4)
- Daily limit: 50
- No possession limit
What to Do While We Wait
Just because the birds aren’t here yet doesn’t mean you should be sitting around. Get your gear prepped now so when they do show up, you’re not scrambling last minute.
- Scout Daily – The first small groups will tell you where the bigger flocks will land. Get out, glass the fields, and take notes.
- Check Your Gear – Shotguns cleaned? Decoys ready? E-caller working? Don’t wait until you’re in the field to find out something’s broken.
- Secure Permission Early – Once the geese show up, so do the crowds. Lock down your hunting spots now before they get poached out from under you.
- Watch the Weather – A big south wind and a warm-up will bring the first major push. Stay ready.
It’s Coming – Be Ready
The geese will be here—it’s just a matter of time. When they do show up, it’ll happen fast, and if you’re not ready, you’ll miss the best days of the season. Stay sharp, keep an eye on the skies, and be ready to roll.
When the first big flocks hit, I’ll be in the fields. See you out there.
